The following relief maps are exhibited in the Musée des Plans-Reliefs, part of the Musée de l'Armée in the Hôtel des Invalides, Paris and in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lille. The collection in Paris comprises 100 relief maps in total, which are currently undergoing a restoration project. The first phase of this project is complete, and the museum currently displays 24 relief maps of fortresses in the coastal areas of France. The maps are displayed in an arched attic of Les Invalides where they have been stored since 1777. With low light levels to avoid damaging the relief maps, the museum is strangely atmoshperic, particularly when quiet. Each map is fronted by a display panel giving information about the fortifications and showing pictures of the site today. |
There is a technique to photographing relief maps... I have yet to master it, so please bear with me on the blurred photographs below. In truth, photographs cannot do these magnificent articles justice - A visit to Les Invalides in Paris and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lille is highly recommended for all those interested in Vauban fortifications. I intend to write a short passage for each map, putting it into historical context. |
