The Project

My name is Dominic Goode, I am an engineering student in the UK, although I am currently studying in Toulouse as part of my course. In 2004, I was fortunate enough to be the recipient of a Charles de Gaulle Bursary, offered by the British Council, which provides £1000 for students from the UK to spend four weeks in France carrying out an individual research project of their own devising. My project was to study the fortresses designed by the great French engineer Vauban.

I visited over 20 fortresses in France in summer 2004, listed below. Part of the project was the creation of this site, designed to be a resource for those interested in fortresses or history of Vauban's period. Although many of the articles on this site will be written by me, I am looking for people to write articles and provide pictures for the site. So if you have visited a fortified place of the Vauban period and you would like to contribute an article or pictures, please contact me. You will of course receive full credit for your work.
